Being There
it’s what matters. Today my mother found out that her best friend from childhood was buried this morning - having died from cancer.  Time and time again she’s put off reconnecting with her due to “hectic life” and now she’ll never have the chance.  She didn’t even know to make it to the funeral and only found out coincidentally because my uncle works at the...

Word of the Day: Obfuscate
To make so confused or opaque as to be difficult to perceive or understand. Obfuscation is the concealment of intended meaning in communication, making communication confusing, intentionally ambiguous and more difficult. No, word of the day is not something that I do. but I just learned that word and not only is it fun to say but I’d say it’s pretty useful. At the very least you...

shoutabout-it: Over the past few days I’ve come across some really great resources that have pointed out ways for people around the world to help support the protesters in Egypt and I thought it would be a good idea to make a list so that all of the information could be found in one place. Here’s what we can do to help: Fatima posted this letter a few days ago with some great resources from...

whitehotcenter replied to your post: January in Reading… What’s on the list for February? I’m a hugely impulsive reader. I can’t predetermine when I’ll read things.. I just buy anything and everything I find that looks promising so that I have a small personal library that I can go to whenever I’m in the need of new pages to read.  Also I’m very particular...

the activity, not the city of Pennsylvania, nor the Railroad from Monopoly. I’ve decided to make a post at the end of each month listing the books I’ve read in full during that month.  Of course there’s some stuff I read intermittently, such as poetry collections, short story collections, text books, et cetera.. those won’t be listed here.  If you care to discuss any of...

Linking the theories of “self-conciousness” to the exigencies of capitalism, one writer in Printers’ Ink commented that “advertising helps to keep the masses dissatisfied with their mode of life, discontented with ugly things around them. Satisfied customers are not as profitable as discontended ones.” An excerpt from Stuart Ewen’s Captains of Conciousness:...

"Maturity"
It seems to me that as we grow older we’re expected to be more selective with the company we keep.  I don’t know where this tradition came from, or exactly what to make of it but it just became clear to me.  Let me illustrate, in a simple fashion, what I mean. Imagine being in elementary school. Wasn’t it generally true that everyone was your friend? Aren’t there group...

Having
gone through the American High School system I’d really like to ask…. why the fuck don’t we teach about the complexities of the Civil Rights movement? Modern education just paints the picture that African Americans were enslaved until Lincoln came and saved the day, and then that racism persisted until Martin Luther King came along and ended segregation. Dualistic History...

My Day
Was spent enjoying winter in Letchworth State Park.  A friend of mine had a family get together in a rented cabin and since his mom LOOVES us the whole crew road out there to partake in the festivities.   Stopped at a thrift store on the way.. the place was wall to wall floor to ceiling..stuff. just stuff. there was a nice yellow type writer I considered buying for only 5 dollars but the ribbon...
